A flock of Angry Birds edged out superheroes in Captain America: Civil War to take the top slot in domestic theaters.

The Angry Birds Movie, a Sony Corp.-distributed smartphone-game adaptation, collected $39 million at the box office in the U.S and Canada, ComScore Inc. said Sunday in an e-mailed statement. Walt Disney Co.s Captain America fetched $33.1 million in its third weekend for second place.

The opening-weekend success is a shot in the arm for closely held Rovio Entertainment Oy, the Espoo, Finland-based maker of more than a dozen Angry Birds mobile games. While its titles have been downloaded more than 3 billion times since 2009, waning interest has slowed sales of merchandise — from ice cream and soda pop to bed sheets and wall stickers — and led to job cuts.

The big screen adaptation of the popular smartphone game explains why the birds are so angry. On an island populated entirely with flightless birds, a few outcasts take on a band of invading green pigs. Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad lend their voices to the outcast birds.

The production and marketing costs were funded by Rovio, and Sony Pictures is distributing the movie. To break even at the box office, the film will have to gross $173 million worldwide, once added to other revenue including TV, digital sales and merchandising, according to SNL Kagan analyst Wade Holden.

The average profit margin of 10 major animations, including Despicable Me or last years The SpongeBob Movie, is about 53 percent, including all revenue from a film, Holden estimates. To match that, Angry Birds would have to gross $493.3 million worldwide at the box office.
